Seven Questions To Ask Your Web Designer

  1. What quality standards do you use? Will your web designers build your site to W3C standards? Do you get to approve the website as it's being built? Do they have any internal quality checks or is it just up to the individual web designer?
  2. Do you use templates? Many web designers use templates, but templates perform very poorly on search engines and they offer limited design options. Your website should be custom coded and built to your business needs, so it delivers results.
  3. Can I phone you? Can you talk to your web designer personally or will there just be an email address? Are they even based in Australia? Many companies limit or stop you having direct contact with your website designer, but this often results in poor understanding and frustration.
  4. Do I own my website? Who owns the copyright of the content and any images used in the website? Who owns the domain name to your website? Check, as some less ethical website companies will use this to tie you in with their website designers?
  5. Will you help me if I need it? What sort of support will your web designer provide after the site is complete? Will they make small changes or ignore your calls? Will they explain how to get the most from your website? What if there's a problem? Are you confident that your web designer understands customer service and is committed to building a lasting partnership with your business?
  1. Can you optimise my website? Most web designers will tell you their websites are ‘search engine friendly’, but this is generally a cop out. While this may be true, being ‘friendly’ and being on page one for search terms that will make you money are two very different things. Very few web designers are also SEO (search engine optimisation) specialists, because SEO requires a very different skill set than web design. Unless you get this right, your website will be invisible to your potential customers. Test where your web designer’s own website ranks in Google for competitive keywords and see what they have done for their customers. Don’t rely on reassurance, look for evidence.
  2. What is your marketing background? Your website is your primary marketing tool to promote your business. If your website designer doesn’t excel in online marketing or work in conjunction with an internet marketing consultant, then you’re buying a technical solution rather than a business solution. Remember that you want to make more money, so look for the right skills in your web designer.
